In the the spring of 2020 with GPS features in most phones, and Google Earth with images and maps within a click or touch on the screen, I thought about how sailors have crossed the oceans for hundreds of years before the GPS era.

Well, after a while I understood why you either engrave you own scale, or print out the available paper scales.
Look at the picture from Wiki sextant [1], what does the angle between 0 - 90 degrees look like? It is not a square angle, it looks more like 45 degrees. This is why a protractor with normal division, 360 degrees for a full circle, and 90 degrees for a square angle, does not work in this specific case. On the Wiki page the function of the sextant is described, and why the division of the scale is unusual. Maybe an old sextant with a usable scale could be found? |
The received sextant was as described on the auction site.
